Estimated insurance value of your car, including accessories and a fitted CNG kit.
How to use the car IDV calculator
- Enter the ex-showroom price of your car’s exact model and variant. It is printed on your purchase invoice. For a used car, use the ex-showroom price of the same variant when it was new.
- Enter the first registration date from your RC and the date your new policy starts. The tool works out the exact age on the policy start date.
- Add extras (optional): electrical or non-electrical accessories fitted after purchase, and an externally fitted CNG/LPG kit.
- Read your IDV, the slab you fall in, and how the IDV will fall at each of the next five renewals.
The car IDV formula
Depreciation is not a guess. Indian motor policy wordings carry a fixed schedule that is applied for the purpose of fixing IDV:
| Age of vehicle | Depreciation for IDV | IDV as % of ex-showroom |
|---|---|---|
| Not exceeding 6 months | 5% | 95% |
| Exceeding 6 months but not exceeding 1 year | 15% | 85% |
| Exceeding 1 year but not exceeding 2 years | 20% | 80% |
| Exceeding 2 years but not exceeding 3 years | 30% | 70% |
| Exceeding 3 years but not exceeding 4 years | 40% | 60% |
| Exceeding 4 years but not exceeding 5 years | 50% | 50% |
| Above 5 years | Mutually agreed | Based on market value |
Worked example
Priya’s hatchback had an ex-showroom price of ₹6,80,000. It was registered on 10 March 2024 and her renewal starts on 1 November 2026, so the car is 2 years and 7 months old — the “2 to 3 years” slab, 30% depreciation.
- Car: ₹6,80,000 − 30% = ₹4,76,000
- Reverse camera and touchscreen fitted later for ₹30,000: ₹30,000 − 30% = ₹21,000
- Total IDV: ₹4,97,000
If her renewal had fallen before 10 March 2026 the car would have been in the “1 to 2 years” slab and the IDV would have been 20% lower than the price instead of 30% — the date matters, which is why this calculator asks for it instead of a rough “age in years”.
What is not part of car IDV
Registration charges, road tax, the first insurance premium, FASTag, extended warranty and dealer handling charges are excluded. That is why even a brand-new car’s IDV (95% of ex-showroom) is noticeably lower than its on-road price. If that gap worries you, look at Return-to-Invoice cover.
Tip before you renew Insurers usually let you choose an IDV within a band around their system value. A quote that looks cheap often has a lower IDV. Compare quotes at a similar IDV with our IDV vs Premium tool.
Car IDV calculator FAQs
Is the IDV shown here the same as my insurer’s?
It will be very close for cars up to five years old, because insurers use the same depreciation schedule. Small differences come from the ex-showroom price the insurer has on file for your variant and city, and from any adjustment you choose within the insurer’s allowed band.
Does IDV change during the policy year?
No. IDV is fixed at the start of each policy year and treated as the vehicle’s value for that whole year for total loss and theft claims. It is reset at the next renewal.
My car is a company-fitted CNG model. Should I add the kit separately?
No. A factory-fitted CNG kit is already included in the ex-showroom price. Only add a kit that was fitted after purchase and endorsed on your RC.
What if my car is more than five years old?
The schedule stops at five years. After that the IDV is agreed between you and the insurer, usually based on the resale value of similar cars. The calculator shows an indicative figure and marks it as an estimate.
