Estimated insurance value of your motorcycle or scooter.
How bike IDV is calculated
Two-wheelers use exactly the same age-wise depreciation schedule as cars. The starting point is the ex-showroom price of your model and variant; registration, road tax and insurance are left out.
| Age of vehicle | Depreciation for IDV | IDV as % of ex-showroom |
|---|---|---|
| Not exceeding 6 months | 5% | 95% |
| Exceeding 6 months but not exceeding 1 year | 15% | 85% |
| Exceeding 1 year but not exceeding 2 years | 20% | 80% |
| Exceeding 2 years but not exceeding 3 years | 30% | 70% |
| Exceeding 3 years but not exceeding 4 years | 40% | 60% |
| Exceeding 4 years but not exceeding 5 years | 50% | 50% |
| Above 5 years | Mutually agreed | Based on market value |
Worked example: a 150cc motorcycle
Arjun bought a 150cc motorcycle with an ex-showroom price of ₹1,18,000. It was registered on 5 August 2024 and his own-damage cover renews on 5 September 2026 — the bike is 2 years and 1 month old, so it falls in the 30% slab.
- Bike IDV: ₹1,18,000 − ₹35,400 = ₹82,600
- Crash guard and saddle bags bought later for ₹6,000: ₹6,000 − 30% = ₹4,200
- Total IDV: ₹86,800
Why bike IDV matters more than you think
Two-wheelers are stolen far more often than cars, and a theft claim is settled at the IDV on your policy. A policy bought with an unrealistically low IDV to save a couple of hundred rupees can mean thousands less if the bike is never found. Because two-wheeler own-damage premiums are small, the cost of keeping a fair IDV is usually modest — check it with the bike premium estimator.
Long-term policy? If you bought a multi-year own-damage cover with a new bike, the IDV for each year is usually fixed in the schedule at the start, stepping down year by year. See how IDV works on long-term two-wheeler policies.
Bike IDV FAQs
Is scooter IDV calculated differently from motorcycle IDV?
No. Scooters, mopeds and motorcycles all use the same depreciation schedule. Only the ex-showroom price differs.
Does IDV apply to third-party-only bike insurance?
No. Third-party cover pays for damage you cause to others and has no IDV. IDV only matters if you have own-damage cover — a comprehensive policy or standalone own-damage policy.
Can I increase my bike’s IDV?
Within limits. Most insurers allow a band around their system value at renewal. A higher IDV raises the own-damage premium slightly and the theft or total-loss payout fully.
