Open calculator →IDV is fixed at the start of every policy year. It starts from the manufacturer’s listed selling price — the ex-showroom price — and reduces with the age of the vehicle using a fixed schedule printed in Indian motor policy wordings.
Worked example: a car with an ex-showroom price of ₹8,00,000, registered 2 years and 4 months before the policy starts, falls in the “2 to 3 years” slab (30%). IDV = ₹8,00,000 − ₹2,40,000 = ₹5,60,000.
Ex-showroom price of the model and variant, plus accessories and kits fitted after purchase (depreciated at the same rate).
Registration charges, road tax, insurance, FASTag and extended warranty — that is why IDV is lower than your on-road price even for a brand-new car.
| Age of vehicle | Depreciation for IDV | IDV as % of ex-showroom |
|---|---|---|
| Not exceeding 6 months | 5% | 95% |
| Exceeding 6 months but not exceeding 1 year | 15% | 85% |
| Exceeding 1 year but not exceeding 2 years | 20% | 80% |
| Exceeding 2 years but not exceeding 3 years | 30% | 70% |
| Exceeding 3 years but not exceeding 4 years | 40% | 60% |
| Exceeding 4 years but not exceeding 5 years | 50% | 50% |
| Above 5 years | Mutually agreed | Based on market value |
Older than 5 years? The schedule stops at 5 years. After that, IDV is agreed between you and the insurer, usually based on what similar vehicles sell for. Our calculators label these figures as estimates.
Depreciation, parts depreciation, NCB slabs and deductibles follow standard Indian motor policy wordings; third-party rates follow the Government notification.
Calculations happen on your device. We never ask for your phone, email or registration number to show a result.
Every result shows the formula and the figures behind it, so you can match it line by line against an insurer’s quote.

IDV (Insured Declared Value) is the maximum amount your insurer will pay if your car or bike is stolen or declared a total loss. It is the manufacturer’s listed selling price (ex-showroom) minus age-based depreciation, plus the depreciated value of accessories that are not part of the factory price.
IDV = ex-showroom price − depreciation + (accessories value − depreciation). Depreciation follows the IRDAI schedule: 5% up to 6 months, 15% up to 1 year, 20% up to 2 years, 30% up to 3 years, 40% up to 4 years and 50% up to 5 years. Registration charges, road tax and insurance are not included.
The depreciation schedule ends at 5 years. For older vehicles the IDV is mutually agreed between you and the insurer, usually based on the resale value of similar vehicles in similar condition. Our calculator shows an indicative figure and clearly marks it as an estimate.
A higher IDV gives a bigger payout on theft or total loss but raises the own-damage premium. The right IDV is close to your vehicle’s real market value: much lower leaves you under-insured, and higher than the real value does not increase what you can claim.
No. Third-party premium is fixed by the government according to engine capacity (or battery power for EVs). IDV affects only the own-damage part of a comprehensive or standalone own-damage policy.
Yes. Most insurers let you raise or lower the IDV within a band around their system value when you renew. Use the calculator to see the schedule-based IDV, then compare quotes with similar IDVs so you are comparing like with like.
